Delaware is a small state, but that doesn’t mean you’ve seen it all! Check out each of these hidden gems that show off the natural beauty of the First State. Spot wildlife, learn about conservation, walk through historic sites, and take the time to relax this Fall in Delaware.
1. Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Preserve
The Peterson Wildlife Preserve is one of Delawares hidden gems. Located on the Wilmington Riverfront, this park features a gorgeous wildlife center where you will find stunning views and tons of information about local critters.
2. Big Stone Beach
Big Stone Beach is an almost always empty beach just east of Milford. Visit in the fall to have the Bay to yourself! Bring bug spray, though - as you can expect, they can get kind of bad when the weather begins to cool down.
3. Zwaanendael Park
This gorgeous park in Lewes is a tribute to those who founded the city. Relax by the fountain on a crisp Fall afternoon.
4. Redden State Forest
Redden State Forest is one of the most isolated places in Delaware! You will love picnicking by the creek surrounded by acres of wilderness.
5. Blackbird Creek
Blackbird Creek is another quiet spot in the First State. Paddle down the creek for views you cannot find elsewhere.
6. Brandywine Springs Park
Thanks to a mineral "healing" spring, this New Castle County Park
used to be a resort and amusement park ! Today it is still just as beautiful, with remnants of the park on display, a historic visitor's center at Greenbank Station, and miles of trails to hike.
7. Nemours
For years, Nemours was the DuPont Estate that nobody saw. Now that it is finally open for public tours, you have got to see it! It may be the most spectacular mansion and garden along the DuPont corridor.
8. Burton Island
Burton Island is a birdwatcher's paradise, and so many people have never even heard of it! Enjoy the salt air and sound of water, waves, and wildlife as you stroll this boardwalked trail in Delaware Seashore State Park.
Delaware is so full of wonder! However, not every Delawarean likes to wander through the willows and keep an eye out for osprey. If you prefer discovering a different type of hidden gem in Delaware, Take This Quirky Road Trip To Visit Delaware’s Most Unique Roadside Attractions .
