We all know DC is full of history and as it turns out, some of that history doesn’t want to stay in the past. The DC area is full of haunted places but this one road just might have the spookiest story in the entire city. Colchester Road in Clifton, Virginia is the most haunted street near DC. If you grew up near DC then you already know the story behind Colchester Road, but you might be more familiar with its name “Bunny Man Bridge.”
Colchester Road is actually one of the oldest roads in the area. It used to go from the farmland of Fairfax County to the wharf town of Colchester, which was a port along the Occoquan River. After Alexandria was founded, however, Colchester became less of a busy port town and more of a small town. The road was eventually broken up and only parts of it are still in existence.
Today the Colchester Road overpass is known as "Bunny Man Bridge" and is the most well known ghost story in the area. Legend has it that in 1904, a prison for the criminally insane in Clifton was shut down. while the county was transferring inmates, one of the prison vans was in an accident and many of the prisoners escaped into the surrounding woods. Almost all of the prisoners were either killed or captured. Except for two.
Marcus Lawster and Douglas Griffen remained on the loose and authorities searched for them. The only trail was half eaten bunny rabbit they found along the woods. Eventually the police reached the Colchester Road Overpass and they found Marcus hanging from the tunnel entrance. Douglas Griffen was never caught and The bridge became known as "Bunny Man Bridge."
Strange things have been reported near Bunny Many Bridge, including mysterious deaths and phenomena over the years. The story is that if you walk all the way down the tunnel at midnight, the Bunny Man will get you!
