DC is a government town, which means there are rules and regulations all over the place. Some of them make sense and some of the don’t. However there are a few rules that we all follow, no matter where you work or where you are from or how long you are here. These are the 11 unofficial DC rules.
1. You never avoid political conversations. In fact, you bring them up.
Because it’s actually impossible to avoid those conversations here.
2. You always ask people what they do for a living, no matter.
It’s a first instinct.
3. You quickly follow up that question with "Where are you originally from?"
Because very few people are actually from here.
4. You always stand on the right side of the escalator and walk on the left.
Obviously, it’s a cardinal rule.
5. You have a go-to restaurant, coffee shop, and bar that you frequent.
Because in a city that has so much to offer, we all like to stick to our favorites.
6. You don’t talk on the Metro, especially in the morning.
This rule has obviously been broken late-night after a night at the bar.
7. You have strong feelings about the sports teams.
These feelings could be negative or positive (and you can have both those feelings in one season) but they’re always strong.
8. You complain about having to go to the suburbs.
You actually think about not going if you have to cross the bridge to either Maryland or Virginia to get there.
9. You walk across the street even when the light is red.
You always check to see if cars are coming but you have no time for those lights.
10. You avoid tourist attractions.
In fact, there are probably plenty of Smithsonian museums you have never been to because you want to stay away from The Mall. The exception to this may be visiting the Monuments at night.
11. You never really stop loving DC.
Even when it drives you crazy, which it will.
