But there’s one beach two hours outside of DC that is unlike any other in the world! For some history and maybe a few thrills you need to visit Point Lookout State Park. It is absolutely the most unique beach near DC!
Point Lookout State Park is a Maryland State Park in southern Maryland that’s known for beautiful views, a charming beach, great camping and a haunted history.
When you first enter Point Lookout, it looks like most other state parks and beaches in the area. There are camp sites, a beach for humans and a pet beach where pets can run unleashed.
You see, Point Lookout Lighthouse might be one of the most haunted places in the entire state. This is where Point Lookout’s history becomes important.
Many were buried in the park, only to be dug up and moved to a cemetery a few miles north years later. Over the years, there have been reports of strange sounds, noises and figures by visitors and rangers.
The Point Lookout Lighthouse is only open a few days a year so you will want to call ahead to visit. There is also a Civil War Museum and Marshland Nature Center in the park where you can learn about the history and the nature in the surrounding area.
Point Lookout is still a favorite destination among Washingtonians, even with its haunted history. It’s a quick drive and a gorgeous place to enjoy nature, camp out on the beach and relax in natural beauty
We recommend paying it a visit, learning about the history. But always keep an eye and ear out for any mysterious sounds of soldiers talking, laughing or crying in the distance because you never know when a ghost will make its appearance!
