DC is one of the best road trip towns. There are so many charming towns and perfect road trip destinations near DC. Washingtonians have many small towns to visit for day or weekend trips. But we found a few towns in the DC area that are so underrated that you might not think to go to them.
Leonardtown Maryland is a quaint town right along Breton Bay. In the 18th century it was known as "a most convenient place." Today visitors can enjoy plenty of charm in their town square, wineries, shops, galleries and restaurants.
Clifton, Virginia is 30 miles from DC in southwestern Fairfax County. Clifton is a slow-paced historic town. Stroll down beautiful Main Street and check out each of the signs outside the historic homes. Shop at the Clifton General Store and enjoy one of the delicious cafes in downtown.

Historic St. Mary’s City was Maryland’s first city and played an important role in Maryland’s history. Today it’s a living history museum and National Historic Landmark. The town is an immersive historical experience filled with costumed interpreters and actors who play out historical reenactments.

Haymarket Virginia was once known as a "crossroads" as it’s situated at the intersection of the Old Carolina Road and North Branch of Dumfries Road, which were once used as trade routes. It’s a walkable town full of local heritage and plenty of attractions for visitors.
