DC is often a transient city. The political scene can move quickly and for many people DC is just a stopping point in their lives, a place to work for a few years before moving on to something else. But for some of us, DC is home and no matter where life takes us, there’s a special spot in our hearts just reserved for the Nation’s Capital. I’m one of those people and no matter how often I’ve strayed from Washington, I always come back home and these 12 reasons top the list.
There is nothing quite like the marking of spring every year when Cherry Blossoms take over the city. Most tourists just assume that cherry blossoms are only around the tidal basin but they are actually all over the city and they never fail to delight.
We know how to brunch in this city and we don’t apologize for it. Not only do we have a ridiculously delicious cuisine scene, but we also have perfected the art of those mimosa-filled, is it breakfast or lunch, let’s eat french toast at 3pm, vibe.

Yes, growing up in DC meant you got dragged to every monument on the class trip. The out of town family who visits will always ask you to take them in the middle of the day. But those who really love DC know the magical feeling of watching the World War II memorial fountains light up, the moon sparkle across the reflecting pool and old Mr. Lincoln gleaming from his perch.

Maybe it’s because the people in this city are always working making coffee meetings a popular place to discuss policies but Washington DC has nailed the coffee shop and bakery scene. You can always find a good cup of joe and an even better baked goods.
We have to get something for surviving DC humidity every summer and Mother Nature gives us fall. When the trees all over the district start turning golden reds and oranges, it never disappoints.
The holiday season in DC is one of the most fun times of the year. Ice skating rinks pop up all over the city and the National Christmas tree lights up, allowing visitors to take a stroll around it, check out the state trees surrounding it and view the beautiful holiday decor.
