It managed to feel like summer late into the season this year but the experts are predicting that it’s almost peak fall foliage time! Since it’s that time of year, we had to share this gorgeous road near DC that will give you the most jaw-dropping views of fall foliage in all of DC! A drive down Skyline Drive is the perfect fall drive
Skyline Drive is a 105 mile road that drives straight through Shenandoah National Park.
To get to Skyline Drive from DC, you have to take 66 West all the way to Front Royal, which takes about an hour and a half.
From there, you can enter the park and begin enjoying the fantastic views.
Shenandoah runs along part of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Skyline will take you along the ridge of the mountains.
There are scenic overlooks along the way and trailheads, in case you want to get a quick hike in.
Or you can stop off at one of the attractions in the park or on the way, such as Skyline Caverns in Front Royal. This is one of the closest natural wonders to DC.
On the way down you can find many local restaurants and cafes, including Brookside Restaurant. This little spot serves up delicious diner style food.
Even if you decide not to stop and to stay in your car, you will be rewarded with incredible views of the mountains and Shenandoah Valley.
The drive on Skyline itself can take 3-4 hours so you might not want to drive the entire length of it unless you stay overnight at one of the resorts in the park.
No matter how far you drive, you will never forget the incredible beauty you see along Skyline Drive!
