If you want the most unique, most unusual, and most talked about restaurant experience in Washington DC, you have to go to minibar by Jos é Andr é s. Last year in their review, The Washington Post said “Simply put, there’s still nothing else like it.” This innovative and exclusive dining experience in Penn Quarter is meant to engage all of the senses. In an intimate evening, diners are wowed by a culinary experience that is one part entertainment, one part artistry, and one part science experiment with many delicious delights! This is truly the most unique restaurant in Washington DC.
minibar was created by Chef José Andrés and it focuses on molecular gastronomy, which is a type of cooking that blends physics and chemistry to transform the tastes and textures of food to create an innovative dining experience. Dinner at minibar is just as much of a show as it is a dining experience. minibar only seats 12 guests at every seating so reservations are absolutely required. Guests sit along a counter right in front of the kitchen, where the chefs prepare your meals for the evening.
This is where the magic happens and where you will watch the chefs prepare your 26 course meal. And yes, it is a 26 course meal and it costs $275/per person so it is an investment but one that all foodies have to admit is worth it.
As you wait for the presentation to begin, you can choose to have a drink cocktail, which are just as unique as the food. Passionfruit mezcal margarita, house-made almond milk, watermelon rootbeer, whatever you choose each drink is handcrafted and flavorful. This is the Oaxacan Marshmallow, served over ice, which melts in your mouth.
Everything prepared at minibar comes with a flair for the dramatics.
It is probably the only place where you see a pesto filled syringe fill fusilli, that tastes just as good as it looks being prepared.
Presentation is incredibly important at minibar so as you enjoy your meals, you will be delighted at how they arrive on your table. Tarts, bread, nuggets, and other bites may be presented inside ornate boxes or even wooden books.
Perhaps you may fear that minibar is kitschy and flamboyant with their antics and in any other restaurant, that might be true but here the crowning glory really is the amazing food. No matter how it is presented or what it is called, these culinary concoctions are flavorful and delicious.
They have sea urchin ceviche with hibiscus, crispy chicken skin, coconut sticky rice and so many more creations.
You might try “When Pigs Fly” which is meringue filled with bacon ice cream.
Or the Rubber Ducky, which has foie gras ice cream at the center.
And if you’re lucky and its your birthday, you may even end up with a cotton candy cake.
No matter what you eat at minibar, you will never forget the experience of whimsy, creativity, ingenuity and, of course, the amazing flavors and tastes.
Every tiny detail is done right at minibar right down to the Simpsons characters holding your check.
If you are looking for the most creative meal of your life, try minibar by Jose Andres at 855 E St NW and you will have a memory for a lifetime!
