We’re going to let you in a secret. DC secretly serves the best Italian subs. There are a few places to get really great sandwiches in this district. But one of the best places is a little shop in Southeast DC. Mangialardo’s Deli looks unassuming from the outside but it is the best deli in DC!
Mangialardo’s was opened in 1953 by Antonio and Anna Mangialardo. It moved to its current location at Pennsylvania Avenue and 13th Street in 1958.
Today the shop is run by the third generation of the Mangialardo family. They continue their ancestors traditions of serving great food without the frills.
There’s no seating in Mangialardo’s Deli. It’s a no frills space with just a simple counter to order. There’s no delivery and you take your food to go!
They serve hot and cold subs and you have your choice of toppings. You also have your choice of bread. Most people choose either a hard or soft roll but they also have bread for your sandwiches as well.
The best seller at Mangialardo’s is the G-Man sub. It is renowned in the DC area. The G Man comes with ham, salami, mortadella, pepperoni, fontina cheese, provolone cheese and oregano.
It was originally ordered by a "government man" or an FBI agent who requested the unique order in the 1970s. If you haven’t ordered yet, it’s definitely time to make a trip to the deli.
Mangialardo’s is located at 1317 Pennsylvania Ave SE between S Potomac Avenue and South K Street in Capitol Hill. It’s a DC landmark that everyone needs to visit!
