1. Root for the Penguins
Look we know we lose to you often in the playoffs, but we do not care. We don’t want to hear any Pens fans chanting in our bars.
2. Blame us for everything wrong in the government.
Listen, if you have a problem with the government, vote or get involved. Don’t blame a city where there are many, many people who are not involved in the government and are just as affected as you are by their choices.
3. Assume it’s dangerous
DC has a bad rap stemming from the 70s and 80s but we’re so much safer than we once were.
4. Stand in line at Georgetown Cupcakes
We know there is a show about them but when you stand around the corner in that line, you really do make every Washingtonian just shake their head.
5. Not try a half smoke
They don’t look delicious. We know. But you can’t come to DC or live here and not try one (unless you don’t eat meat, then you really shouldn’t try them). They are a DC delicacy and they are quite tasty!
6. Support the Cowboys
Not everyone is a Redskins fan in DC but whatever you do, just don’t cheer for the Cowboys. We still don’t know why they’re called "America’s team."
7. Complain about how expensive everything is.
It is absolutely expensive to live and visit DC. It’s a higher cost of living, parking costs a lot and so do the restaurants. With that being said, we have a fantastic public transportation system that is very affordable and we have 20 free museums and galleries that anyone can visit!
8. Call DC a swamp
This has become a very popular phrase over the last few years and we get it, you are not talking about DC but the government. But when you say "We’re going to drain the swamp in DC," and you’re talking about someone’s beautiful city that they call home, you need to understand it’s going to make some Washingtonians angry.
9. Going to chain restaurants or coffeeshops.
Please, just don’t go to the places where you recognize the name of it. DC is quickly becoming a culinary capital in the country and we have so many incredible independently owned restaurants and coffee shops.
10. Park in a no parking zone.
You will get a ticket and you might get towed. DC is one of those places that takes parking seriously. Don’t chance it. If you want to drive in the district, just accept that it will take you a long time to find parking.
11. Only visit the monuments, memorials and other well known sights.
We know the hot spots and we talk about them often here. But there are neighborhoods not near the Mall that deserve a visit. Visit the beautiful Southwest Waterfront, explore the embassies in Dupont Circle, shop and dine along U Street. DC is a fantastically diverse city and each neighborhood and area has something special.
