The words “lonely” and road don’t really go together in DC. We all know that we’re practically the nation’s capital in traffic.
But there’s actually a road that goes through DC that is the “Loneliest Road In America.” Take US Route 50, which cuts right through DC to experience part of the Loneliest Road in America.
US Route 50 is known as "America's Loneliest Road." It drives through 11 states from California to Ocean City, Maryland.
DC is, of course, at the very beginning or end of the drive, depending on how you look at it. And since it is a city, our part of the road tends to be a bit busier and more trafficked than other areas.
It will take you through the downtown area and past many of the most historic spots. And if you continue driving along Route 50 through DC into either Maryland or Virginia, you will be able to enjoy the true beauty and uniqueness of this road.
If you wanted to take Route 50 to Maryland, you would drive through the Northeast part of DC, passing New York Avenue and The Arboretum before crossing into Maryland.
Once in Maryland, the road gets much more remote.
You'll drive through small towns and gorgeous scenery before you hit the Bay Bridge.
You can take US 50 across the bridge over to Ocean City, Maryland where it officially ends.
Or you can head in the other direction towards Virginia. There, Route 50 will take you through small towns like Winchester and out into the countryside.
If you keep following the route, you'll end up passing through some of the country's most gorgeous landscapes. Depending on how far you go, you could through the Rocky Mountains, the Great Plains and the desserts
It's hard to believe that the same route that takes you through the trafficked streets of DC will take you through the desserts of Nevada. But that's part of the uniqueness of US Route 50. It shows you America is truly connected.
Did you have any idea that Route 50 was the loneliest road in America? If you love drives around this city, you will love this unique parkway in DC!
