The Lighthouse Road Trip Near Washington DC That's Dreamily Beautiful

You normally don’t associate lighthouses with the city but with its close proximity to so many coastlines in Maryland and Virginia, there are actually quite a few light houses near Washington DC. We mapped out this lighthouse road trip to some of the most picturesque lighthouses in the area.
The road trip is about 11 hours so you will probably want to make a weekend out of the trip and we ended the trip in Assateague Island as a perfect spot for a few days away. You can view the map here.
1. Jones Point Lighthouse (located in Jones Point Park)
Jones Point Lighthouse is one of the last river lighthouses in the country and the only one still in Chesapeake Bay area. It operated from 1856-1926 and was a key part of the area’s commercial center.
2. Piney Point Lighthouse (44701 Lighthouse Rd, Piney Point, MD 20674)
Built in 1836, Piney Point Lighthouse is now a museum where visitors can learn about the history of the area and the importance of the Potomac River as a transport and shipping passage in the 1800s.
3. Point Lookout Lighthouse (11175 Point Lookout Road Scotland, MD 20687)
This lighthouse is at the southernmost tip of Maryland’s western shore of the Chesapeake and marks the entrance to the Potomac River.
4. Drum Point Lighthouse (14200 Solomons Island Road Solomons, MD 20688)
This lighthouse operated from 1883-1962 at Drum Point near Solomons Island. In 1975 it was moved to the Calvert Marine Museum and is open to the public.
5. Cove Point Lighthouse (3500 Lighthouse Blvd Lusby, MD 20657)
Cove Point Lighthouse is a restored lighthouse on Chesapeake Bay. The keeper’s house can actually be rented as a vacation home if you’re interested in spending the night there as a halfway point in our road trip.
6. Concord Point Lighthouse (700 Concord St, Havre De Grace, MD 21078)
Located in Havre de Grace, Concord Point is a historic lighthouse on Susquehanna River that was built in 1827.
7. Turkey Point Lighthouse (Turkey Point Lighthouse Trail, North East, MD 21901)
Turkey Point is a 35-foot high lighthouse standing on 100-foot high bluffs, making it the third highest light off the water in the Chesapeake Bay.
8. Hooper Straight Lighthouse (213 North Talbot Street St. Michaels, Maryland 21663)
The Hooper Straight Lighthouse was built in 1879. It’s now part of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.
9. Assateague Lighthouse (Assateague Island National Seashore, Chincoteague Island, VA 23336)
Just a quarter of a mile away from Chincoteague Island, the Assateague Lighthouse, built in 18677, is 142 feet high.
