There are plenty of well known small towns near DC that make for dreamy weekend getaways. But we found the most charming town three hours outside of DC that you’ve probably never heard of! Irvington, VA just might be the most charming town in DC and you are going to fall in love with it!
Irvington is on the southeastern part of Virginia’s Northern Neck, about 3 hours south of DC. It features 8 miles of coastline along Carter’s Creek, a major tributary to the Rappahannock River.
Not only can you take sailing lessons and rent boats in Irvington, you can also explore Belle Island State Park. You can explore the miles of farmland,, forests, hiking and biking trails. You can also rent canoes and kayaks.
You can learn about the history of the town and the importance of maritime life in many of the surrounding museums including the Steamboat Museum, Reedville Fisherman’s Museum and the Morratico Waterfront Museum.
Closer into town, there is still plenty to do, like shopping, dining and museums. The Dandelion is one of the most popular shops in town, housed in a former Steamboat Era house.
While you’re shopping, you may work up an appetite but it won’t be difficult to find delicious meals in Irvington. They have a variety of great restaurants and cafes, including the popular coffee spot, The Local.
