Washingtonians are lucky to live near many surrounding beaches in Maryland, Virginia and Delaware. But when the rest of the Mid-Atlantic reasons are flocking to the tourist destinations, sometimes you just need to escape from the crowds and enjoy a hidden gem just outside of Washington DC. Nestled in Leesylvania State Park, this hidden beach near Washington DC will take you a million miles away from it all.
Right on the tidal shores of the Potomac River, a quiet beach is surrounded by hiking, picnicking, fishing and boating activities.
The park is on the National Register of Historic Landmarks, Leesylvania is believed to be the site of an Algonquian village and rumor has it Captain John Smith visited the area in 1608.
The park has even more history as it was the home of the famous Lee family, including Revolutionary War hero Henry “Light Horse Harry” Lee who was the grandfather of Civil War general Robert E. Lee.
While the beach isn’t large, it’s perfect for a relaxing quick beach day. There’s also plenty of shaded picnic areas, covered pavilions, and stand alone grills in the park.
Leesylvania State Park is located at 2001 Daniel K. Ludwig Dr.,Woodbridge, VA 22191. It’s open from 6am to 30 minutes after sunset during the week and it’s open 5am to 30 minutes after sunset on the weekends.
