People who have never been to DC or lived here have a lot of strange views about it, thanks to shows like House of Cards and Scandal. So people who call Washington DC home have to deal with some interesting questions from those curious about life in the nations capital. Here are 10 things people always ask when they know you’re from Washington DC.
1. So.. are you actually from DC or outside of it?
Most people in Southern Maryland or Northern Virginia claim Washington DC because it’s easier than explaining exactly where your town is and it’s gotten to the point where some people need to clarify.
2. Do you work for the government?
There’s more to DC than the government, a lot more. But most people just assume everyone is connected by the government.
3. Does everyone work in politics?
There are more reasons to live in DC other than it’s proximity to the White House and yet, some people still don’t understand it.
4. So what do you do?
Oh so you don’t work in politics, but then what do you do? This is also an extremely popular question asked by people who live in DC. We love our jobs here.
5. You're a Redskins fan?
The Redskins may be the most well known Washington DC team (for less than stellar reasons, usually) but not everyone here actually cheers for them. Because DC is a melting pot, you’ll find fans of a variety of football teams and many people claim the Baltimore Ravens.
6. Have you ever been to the White House?
It’s not like a club house. Not everyone hangs out there but if you live here long enough, chances are you’ve taken a tour or been invited to an event there.
7. Do you know the president? Or have you met him?
There are almost 700,000 people who live in Washington but most people are only concerned with one. No we have not all met the president but most of us have seen a senator, congressmen or some type of politician. And we’ve all seen the motorcade.
8. Should I drive or take metro when I visit?
The metro. Always take the metro, even if it’s never on time because you will never find parking.
9. Is DC the south or is it the north?
The South isn’t sure if they want to claim us and neither is the North and people on both sides are always extremely interested. We get hot summers and cool winters . We’re also not a state and not quite a city so the answer is, we’re not sure either.
10. So can I complain to you about (insert X government law)?
Just because we live here does not mean we make laws, know someone who makes laws or have any control over any law.
Are you from Washington DC? What other questions have you been asked? Let us know!
