We know how to dine well in DC. Our city is full of delicious restaurants of almost every type of variety and flavor. But if you are scouting out some delicious meals, remember that there is more to a place that meets the eye. There’s no better example of that than one of DC’s favorite hole in the wall restaurants. El Sol might not look like the home of the most delicious Mexican food in DC but it is the best hole in the wall restaurant in the city.
El Sol Restaurant & Tequileria is located at 1227 11th St NW and if you had never heard of it, you might just walk by the small storefront.
But take our word for it and try it out because you’ll love the food they serve. El Sol is owned by siblings Alfredo Solis and his sister, Jessica. The duo grew up in Mexico City but later relocated to the district.
They worked their way up in restaurants across the city, starting out as dishwashers and climbing the ranks to executive chef positions. In 2014, they opened the doors to El Sol.
El Sol is tiny inside and you may find yourself sitting close to your neighbors but the decor is a charming tribute to Mexico and its food pays homage to fantastic authentic Mexican meals and street food.
All of the ingredients in the dishes are fresh and almost everything is made in-house and authentic. The mole is even shipped weekly from the Solis’ mother in Mexico.
Everything is served in generous portions with plenty of flavor! You can start out your meal with complimentary chips and salsa but we recommend trying their guacamole or cheesy queso fundido con chorizo.
Whether you stop by for a fresh margarita, a quick lunch or a delicious dinner, you will never forget your visit to El Sol. In fact, you may already be planning to return before you’ve even paid the check!
