As Washingtonians, we try to stay away from massive tourist destinations. It’s difficult to do, of course since there are so many! However, even though The National Portrait Museum is one of the most popular Smithsonian museums on the Mall, you should go. And the reason isn’t the beautiful art. But it has to do with the most amazing courtyard in DC.
The National Portrait Gallery is a Smithsonian Museum dedicated portraits, of course. It's an absolutely gorgeous museum.
If you've never been, you need to make a trip. They feature portraits of Americans who have helped create our history including artists, scientists, inventors, activists and politicians.
But really, one of the absolute best parts of the museum isn't even in the museum! It's technically just outside of it.
The Kogod Courtyard is centered between the National Portrait Gallery and the American Art Museum. This gorgeous and ornate courtyard really is another work of art.
In fact, Condé Nast Traveller named Kogod one of the seven architectural wonders of the world.
The museum held an international contest to construct the courtyard. There were submissions from all over the world. The winning submission was by Foster + Partners. They created this wavy ceiling that allows light to beautiful reflect into the spacious courtyard.
The Kogod is the perfect place for Washingtonians to work, relax and hang out. It's open the public and it has free WiFI.
The courtyard has tables, chairs, trees and plants. It's covered and has heat and air conditioning so you can come any time of year.
You'll often see tourists and locals working, eating, drinking or relaxing in this bright airy space.
Occasionally the museum will host a private event in the Kogod Courtyard.
Or you could stumble upon a pubic event like jazz concerts, paint classes or yoga!
Whether you love art or architecture or just need a place to work during the day, you should visit the Kogod Courtyard. It's such a unique space in DC and is one of the best places to enjoy an afternoon downtown.
The Kogod Courtyard is located at the National Portrait Gallery at 8th and F Streets NW. It is open daily from 11:30-7pm.
