Walk into a small warehouse in Northeast DC and you will be overwhelmed with the sweet smell of chocolate. Harper Macaw is DC’s only stand alone chocolate factory in DC. This unique factory, which is run by Colin and Sarah Hartman, sells gourmet chocolate and offers fascinating tours that give you a real peak at how much love goes into these tasty treats.
Harper Macaw opened in 2015 by Colin and Sarah Hartman. This stylish space does not look like Willy Wonka’s Factory but it has a cool and modern vibe from the moment you walk in.
During the 45 minute tour, attendees will be able to see the entire chocolate making process.
Visitors are able to tour through multiple rooms including the delicious smelling room where the cacao is ground and refined.
You can see the chocolate poured from the tempering machine where its heated and cooled and then poured into molds.
The chocolate from Harper Macaw is made from Brazilian cocoa beans. They support sustainable cocoa farms and the Hartmans donate portions of their sales to rainforest conservation in Brazil.
And of course, during the tour, visitors enjoy a chocolate tasting where you can sample Harper Macaw’s delicious chocolate.
There is also a retail store inside the factory which sells a variety of different chocolates. Over the last few years, they have expanded their offerings to include bonbons and chocolate flavor products and drinks.
Harper Macaw is located at 3160 Bladensburg Rd NE. Tours are held on weekends and costs $10.
