If you watched too many fairytales as a child, you may have dreamed about living in a castle a time or two. While we can’t recommend any castles for sale, we can give you an amazing road trip to see the DC area’s magical and most beautiful castles.

We start our tour in Southeast DC at the Blue Castle. This historic building was built in 1891. It used to be a repair shop for the Washington and Georgetown Railroad. In 2014, the National Community Church purchase the building and the current tenants include two DC public charter schools.

Located an hour away in Lutherville, MD is the Cloisters Castle. Built in 1930, the Cloisters is now a wedding and event venue.

Can you imagine going to school here? The Castle at Maryville is home to a preparatory school. This Tudor-style building is situated on 100 acres of woods giving an extra fairytale feeling.

In the early 20th century, the Maryland National Guard built a series of armories around the state. Today, this historic castle is now a recreation center for the city of Frederick.
Moving into Virginia, Bull Run Castle in Aldie, Virginia is a privately owned home. The former owners used to offer tours but now you can only see the outside, which is still worth the drive! The castle is located where Route 15 intersects with Route 50.
Another private home, Melrose Castle was built in 1854 and sits on 50 acres of woods. During the Civil War, the castle was occupied by the Union Army. Today, it’s a private home.
Castle Gatehouse is possibly one of the most majestic water pumping stations in the country! The gatehouse was built in the early 1900s to pump water into the McMillan Reservoir.

Finally, we end up at the Miller House on Embassy Row. The house was built in 1900 and has changed hands over the year. The home was eventually divided into apartments during the Great Depression.
