In case you couldn’t tell, DC loves the holidays. We go all out for it with light displays , special exhibits and plenty of ice skating . There is one holiday tradition that you won’t find anywhere else. The waterskiing Santa is the bizarre holiday event near Washington DC.
In 1986, a fantastic DC tradition began with an innocent game. A group of friends drew straws to determine which one of them would waterski dressed as Santa on Christmas Eve.
The one who "lost" followed through with the bet. And the next year he skied dressed as Santa again. This time, the local news picked up the show. And the tradition began.
Waterskiing Santa has grown into DC area tradition that is fun for the whole family.
And it's not just Santa who waterskis anymore!
Santa's elves join him on the water and so do his reindeer.
Some of the elves can even do a few tricks!
You can see beloved holiday characters like Frosty.
Or some holiday heroes, like The Grinch.
Even Jack Skellington will take a turn!
The whole show is free for everyone to watch. It relies on community volunteers to perform, ski and drive boats.
Afterwards, you can meet Santa and Mrs. Claus for photos at the pavilion on the waterfront. Bring out the family or friends to enjoy this unique DC event on Christmas Eve!
Waterskiing Santa takes place on Christmas Eve at 1pm. You can see the show anywhere from Founders to Waterfront Parks in Alexandria, Virginia.
