This Just Might Be The Most Beautiful Hike Near Washington DC

Sugarloaf Mountain in Dickerson Maryland is one of the best hikes in the Washington DC area. It’s about 45 minutes outside of the District and while it may get crowded, it’s worth the visit to see the spectacular views and beautiful nature there. The Northern Peaks trail to the White Rock overlook has some of the most incredible views on the entire mountain and it just might be the most beautiful hike near DC.
The mountain and the trails on Sugarloaf are well maintained, making it easy for most moderately active people to easily hike the trail. There are a couple of different trails on the hike and a few of them merge together at specific points.
Start in the West Parking lot for the Northern Peaks Trail. This is a five mile trail marked by blue markers throughout.
The terrain on the Northern Peaks Trail varies from rocky to softer ground and during the fall, the area is scattered with leaves.
The Northern Peaks Trail does have its ups and downs as it traverses the different peaks of the mountain and there are some rocky areas that require careful footing.
Along the way on the Northern Peaks Trail, there are plenty of opportunities to see the views as you climb up the mountain.
As you hike the trail, you will be enchanted by the beautiful trees along the way and you might even catch a glance of a whitetail deer chasing through the trees.
The Northern Peaks Trail does not go all the way to the summit of the mountain but you can easily get to the summit by hopping off the trail near the summit and take the red trail up to the top.
The Northern Peaks Trail leads you to White Rocks, a gorgeous overlook which is perfect for taking a break and catching some photos.
Once you are finished with the trail, you may even want to celebrate with a glass of wine from the winery that is located at the base of the mountain. Because you deserve it!
SugarLoaf Mountain is located at 7901 Comus Road in Dickerson Maryland. A quick drive from DC, it should definitely be on every Washingtonian’s bucket list!
