Middleburg was established in 1787 by American Revolutionary War Lieutenant Colonel John Leven Powell. He had bought the land from George Washington’s cousin Joseph Chinn and originally called the area “Chinn’s Crossroads” because it was the halfway point between Alexandria and Winchester.
Middleburg is set among the beautiful countryside with the Blue Ridge and Bull Run mountains in the distance. It’s a beautiful place to see fall foliage and enjoy breathtaking views.
The charming town offers plenty of historical and cultural attractions to enjoy on your trip. You can visit the Aldie Mill, which was completed in 1809 and is one of the only two working water-powered mills in Virginia that is open to the public.
If you are in the mood to sip and sit, be sure to visit one of Middleburg’s many wineries. Popular winers in the area include Three Fox Vineyards, Greenhill Winery & Vineyards and Box Winery, among many others!
Or if you prefer something other than wine, head to the Mt. Defiance Cidery and Distillery, where you can find house made rum or apple brandy, among other beverages.
Golfers will not want to miss the chance to play at Creighton Farms which has been named “Best New Private Golf Course” by Golf Digest when it opened in 2007.
If you are an adventure addict, you will not want to miss the zip-lining fun at Empower Middleburg. They offer moonlight tours select weekends every fall for a unique ride through the treetops.
Of, course after you are done sightseeing, golfing or wine tasting, take some time to explore the downtown area, which is home to many locally owned boutiques, restaurants and cafes.
