Connecticut is known for its dedication to the Arts. In a state that has produced some of the most talented and creative artists of all time, it isn’t a surprise that the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum has been such an inspiration to all who visit.
The museum was founded in 1842 by Daniel Wadsworth, a collector and amateur artist. The museum was originally going to be established as a "Gallery of Fine Art".
The museum was fully opened in 1844 and remains the oldest running public art museum in the country.
The museum currently holds over 50,000 pieces of art, covering 5000 years of European and American artwork up through the modern era.
Regular galleries and exhibits in the Wadsworth include the Morgan Collection of Greek and Roman Antiquities, Baroque and Surrealist painting, and Samuel Colt's firearms collection.
Current traveling exhibits include "The Dance of the Volcano", the bronze mythical sculptures of Paul Manshi (this includes an audio tour about the inspiration of his mythical pieces), and Todd Gray/Matrix 186.
There is no limit to the style of art you will find at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum. Throughout the year, you can enjoy concerts featuring inspiring and different genres from folk to symphonic chamber music.
You can use your smartphone along with the musuem's free wi-fi to access a museum digital map and mobile guide that will allow you to enjoy a self-guided tour.
Regular museum amenities, such as the bistro, Austin House, theatre, and library are currently closed to the public.
Keep an eye on the Museum's website to find the current exhibits and plan your visit around some of the works and events coming here in the future.
No matter how often you have visited, there are so many exhibits and so much artwork, it would take a lifetime to fully take in everything the Wadsworth Antheneum Museum has to offer.
