Now I already think Connecticut is a pretty unique place, but these eats and drinks are pretty cool. Now I don’t know if just serving drinks can qualify you as a restaurant, but I didn’t want to deprive you of a must have experience, so I’m letting you in on a not so well kept secret about where to get the best soda. Get ready to discover your next favorite place, because here we go! These unique and fun restaurants in Connecticut are unforgettable!
1. Caseus Fromagerie & Bistro, New Haven
You can get some really flavorful and even upscale stuff here without having to spend a fortune. This little restaurant is also a marketplace if you’re looking for some new flavors to cook with. What makes it so unique is how well it's managed to keep its French inspiration. Fresh baked bread and homemade jam add extra personality to these one-of-a-kind menu options.
2. Iguanas Ranas Taqueria, Middletown
This is one of the few Mexican restaurants I’ve visited where the food is powerfully flavored and quite authentic. Pair that with the colorful decor and the absolutely amazing margaritas and you’ve got a good thing going. Must try: Al Pastor Tacos for sure!
3. Dinners at the Farm
The unique experience of a fancy multiple course meal outside on a picturesque farm comes at a price. Hosted at Barberry Hill Farm in Madison and White Gate Farm in East Lyme, the experience is $150 per person. But the proceeds go to a number of charities. This is seasonal dining at its finest, but not for kids. So maybe a fancy anniversary getaway?
4. Valencia's Luncheria, Norwalk
This place serves Venezuelan food, and is known to be quite busy on a Friday night. With a combination of traditional plates and more familiar items like coconut shrimp, this place is a festive spot to catch up with friends. And their plantains are pretty good, too.
5. The Traveler Restaurant, Union
This classic American food restaurant serves everything from crab cakes to pizza. But what makes it so unique is that every meal comes with free books. You can also buy books from the library downstairs, but who doesn’t love the idea of perusing for a free novel while your food is being prepared? Just off the I-84, this could be a great stop on your next road trip.
6. Ballou's Wine Bar, Guilford
Can you say fondue? Fondue is always a unique experience, and this place has raised the bar. You can have your choice of cheeses with bread, or try the dessert option where you can dip rice krispie pieces in chocolate. Yum! Not to mention an extensive wine list. This has girls’ (or guys’) night written all over it.
7. 116 Crown, New Haven
The food here is pretty good. They offer a number of items and a pretty decent charcuterie plate. But this is one of those places where you're really coming for the drinks. The bartenders at this establishment are mad scientists in the cocktail brewing world. Not to mention their wine list, which is always changing, usually has a large number of names you can’t seem to find at other places.
8. Avery's Beverages, New Britain
Now I warned you about this place not being a "restaurant," but it does serve drinks so I’m stretching the rules because it is something you have to do at least once. Making your own sodas is good old fashioned fun, and at this factory you get nice glass bottles and low low prices. Even more unique? The flavor names. Kids love dog drool and swamp juice. You’ll have to taste to find out!
Aren’t these places cool? Know of another place to get a totally different or unique dining experience? Tell me about it!
