Tarrywile Park in Danbury is perhaps best known as the home of Hearthstone Castle. One of a surprising number of castles in Connecticut, Hearthstone is a century-old castle that is currently in disrepair. But there are many other things to see in Tarrywile Park’s 722 acres. It’s the largest municipal park in Connecticut and it’s filled with nature and activities galore. One easy way to experience much of the beauty Tarrywile Park has to offer is to hike the park’s main trail. This 4.5-mile trail is such a peaceful spot and it’s one of our favorite trails in Connecticut.
Hearthstone Castle is truly lovely if you can see through its now-rough exterior. Built in 1899, this historic home is now a dilapidated shell of its former self. It's one of many beautiful attractions in Tarrywile Park.
Tarrywile Park's main trail is 4.5 miles long and meanders through the park and wraps around Parks Pond. Because it's an out and back trail, you don't have to do the whole thing if you don't feel up to it.
No matter the season, you'll see beautiful landscape here. Tarrywile Park has a variety of scenery. Forests, fields, mountains, bodies of water... it's a nature lover's wonderland out here!
This trail loops around two small ponds and the larger Tarrywile Lake. Hikes near water are so much fun because you never know what kind of wildlife you'll catch a glimpse of.
Some of the trail markers on this trail can be a little confusing, so make sure you stick to the marked paths. Tarrywile Park has 21 miles of hiking trail.
As always, make sure to wear appropriate hiking shoes and bring along water. Hiking near water means there's often a lot of bugs around, so you may want to wear insect repellent in the warmer months.
