Every fall, Connecticut residents face one difficult-to-answer question: what is the most scenic way to take in views of the fall foliage? With Instagram likes hanging in the balance, we head out on hikes, long drives, and picnics in our quest for the ultimate autumn view. Of all the options available, a journey on the Essex Steam Train & Riverboat might be the most epic.
The Essex Steam Train began operations in 1971 with just one steam engine and three coaches. Today, they operate fifteen coaches with two steam trains.
Autumn is an especially exciting time to ride the rails. On a fall foliage tour, take a train and riverboat journey through the unspoiled beauty of the Connecticut River Valley.
The tours are two and a half hours long, beginning with a ride on an antique locomotive.
Upon disembarking from the train, you'll board the Becky Thatcher Riverboat.
The fall foliage views from the river are absolutely stunning. Nothing is more beautiful than the way the colors of the changing leaves reflect in the water.
During the riverboat journey, you'll catch a unique view of Gillette Castle, one of the most beautiful historic homes in Connecticut.
The riverboat cruise also passes by historic Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam.
Pick up a seasonally-inspired treat from the onsite cafe before or after your adventure.
How will you take in the fall foliage views this year? Are you tempted to book a ride on the Essex Steam Train & Riverboat?
