Old-fashioned general stores are so charming. These businesses used to be on every street corner but are falling by the wayside with giant big-box retailers like Walmart and Target taking over many small towns. However, you can still find these relics of the past in some places. We are lucky enough to still have many New England general stores in Connecticut; many have been here for decades. One of our favorites is the Riverton General Store. This historic building has been a pillar of the small community for over a century. Not only does this place sell wares as you’d expect at a general store, but it also houses a cafe that has some of the very best sandwiches in Connecticut.
