When anyone thinks of Connecticut they think of the beautiful small towns with picturesque scenery and gorgeous historical buildings. In reality, it’s impossible to choose only one town as the coolest, especially since there are so many incredible places in Connecticut. There is just something about Essex though, that stands out. Here are a few reasons why Essex is the coolest place to be in the Northeast.
1. It was officially named the Perfect Small Town
Essex was named The Perfect Small Town in the book 1000 Places to See Before You Die and was also listed as the top spot for small towns in America in Norman Crampton's The 100 Best Small Towns in America
With its friendly attitude, historical atmosphere, and a parade for every holiday, including Groundhog's Day, Essex is the ideal small town.
2. It's the perfect travel destination.
Travelers will find many welcoming accommodations in Essex. Gorgeous inns, such as the Griswold Inn on Main Street and the Copper Beech Inn are not only beautiful, but they also have their own historical stories that visitors are always eager to explore.
3. The local theatre community is something you need to experience.
The Ivoryton Playhouse has had many stars perform on its stage. These days, Ivoryton is the go-to destination for incredible summer theatre.
4. It has an interesting history both on land and water.
While its history hasn't always been happy and sometimes quite tragic, Essex has continued to thrive throughout the centuries. From local historic buildings refurbished into restaurants, shops, and museums, Essex has great pride in sharing every part of its story.
5. You can go back in time by steam train
6. And by riverboat.
Explore the Connecticut River Valley by taking a 2-1/2 ride on a vintage steam locomotive as you listen to the history of the area and explore areas that look the same as they did centuries ago. You will begin your journey by boarding the train at the historic 1892 Essex Station.
You can also take a 1-hour riverboat cruise on the Becky Thatcher. You will enjoy the beautiful river views as well as seeing historic landmarks such as Gilette Castle, Haddam Swing Bridge, and the Godspeed Opera House from a different point of view.
