Do you love to walk or take your bicycle out, but get a little concerned about your safety when it comes to daily traffic? Explore local communities and enjoy beautiful views when you take a walk or ride along the Shoreline Greenway Trail.
The Shoreline Greenway Trail broke ground in 2005 in East Haven after a group of running and cycling enthusiasts decided to create a shoreline trail that allowed for better pedestrian and cyclist accessibility.
Creating a trail that did not allow motorized traffic was not only meant to create a safer environment for pedestrians and bicyclists, but was also meant to help improve the local environment.
When completed, the 25-mile coastal trail will connect community destinations from Lighthouse Point in New Haven to Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison. Currently, approximately four miles of the trail have been completed and are open to the public.
The current 4.8-mile trail has many opportunities for exploration. Enjoy a coastal view of Long Island Sound and Thimble Islands. The trail also winds past marshland, forests, and community gardens.
Not only will you find plenty of opportunities to come across some of the local wildlife while on the trail, but you can learn even more about them at Meig's Point Nature Center . Run by Ranger Russ, the nature center works tirelessly to educate visitors about local plants, wildlife, and assistance in helping to improve the environment through classes and volunteer clean-up projects.
One of the newest and most well-loved areas of the trail is the Labyrinth. Located in Brandford near Chets Pond, the twists and turns of the maze with no dead ends was created by Brandford resident Bill Ludwig. The meditative area is used as a place for residents to enjoy a peaceful walk or gather as a community for inspiring events.
Have fun and explore the beauty of the Shoreline Greenway Trail as they continue to expand. To learn more about plans of the trail, upcoming events, and ways you can help, visit the Shoreline Greenway Trail website.
