Six Amazing Connecticut Secrets You Never Knew Existed

If you live in Connecticut, you proabably know that we have North America’s oldest continuously running theme park. You have probably have also heard about the strange collection of brains in New Haven or the giant Lego blocks in front of the factory up in Enfield. You may know one or two of the following Connecticut secrets, but there are probably a few that you didn’t know.

This tiny park in Warren was once the home of a radar site which was active in the 1950s and 1960s. The site was once an integral part of SAGE (Semi-Automatic Ground Environment) Air Defense Network. The network involved hundreds of radar installations that were placed for security reasons. They were to be able to detect Soviet bombers before they could actually drop a nuclear bomb on us. The ruins to the radar installation are still in existence at Above All State Park.

Every year on the 4th of July, there is one town in Connecticut that has a celebratory parade that is devoid of marching bands. Willimanitc celebrates Independance Day with a parade that features blaring boom boxes. There are also some pretty interesting floats and costumes as well.

There is a time capsule of time buried under the soil in Waterbury. The TimeExpo Museum created a time capsule of things that are Timex to be opened on the 50th anniversary of the museum's opening. The museum is now closed, but hopefully they will stick to digging up that time capsule on May 4, 2051.

In 1885, the highest point in Connecticut was thought to be on Bear Mountain. A tower was built in which a plaque was set to identify and memorialize this point of high elevation. Unfortunately, Bear Mountain is 57 feet too short. The highest point is actually on Mount Frissell and years later the green stake marker was place to commemorate that spot.

The source of that breathtakingly gorgeous flower catalog that arrives every spring is right here in Connecticut. White Flower farm is tucked away in the Northeastern corner of the state in the town of Morris. You can visit this 200 acre nursery and see the astounding beauty in person.

In 1975, the sperm whale was named the Connecticut state animal but it beat out the squirrel by a margin. Located in West Hartford outside of The Children's Museum is life sized Conny, our very own whale that you can walk through.
