Are you excited about the return of live music and the re-opening of Broadway theater? You don’t need to travel to New York City to experience the best in live entertainment. The historic Palace Theater in Waterbury is a venue so beautiful that it looks like it’s made to exclusively entertain royalty.
The Palace Theater was built in 1922 under the direction of Sylvester Z. Poli, the largest theater owner of the early 20th century.
The architecture, designed by Thomas Lamb, was a Renaissance Revival style with a combination of Greek, Roman, and Arabic designs throughout the theater.
Described on opening night in The Waterbury Republican as the "million-dollar palace", the beauty and ornamentation of the theater is breathtaking.
Every part of the theater from the domed ceilings to the grand spaciousness of the lobbies is an elegant reminder of a bygone era with a story to tell.
From 1922 until 1985, The Palace Theater hosted everything from theater productions and silent film screenings to Big Band and rock concerts.
In 1985, the stage went dark until the theater was renovated to its former glory due to a $30 million redevelopment project. The hard work paid off when the bronze doors reopened on November 12, 2004.
The Palace Theater continues its mission through donations and volunteer services, which enable the local community to gather together to be entertained and educated by performing arts and cultural events.
It's a mission that began one hundred years ago and is destined to continue for generations to come.
To experience the theater for yourself, 90-minute tours throughout the venue give you the time to fully absorb the atmosphere.
Not only will you have a chance to tour the theater and get a backstage view, you will also be entertained with the history and tales behind the theater. Admission is $5 per guest.
