Did you know that the oldest ferry in the United States is located in Connecticut? That’s right, this river crossing has been operational since 1655 and is still going strong. So the next time you need to cross the Connecticut River, ditch the bridge and jump on this historic ferry for a unique ride.
The small ferry provides a direct link between the towns of Rocky Hill and Glastonbury at Route 160. Motorists travelling between the two towns can cut almost eight miles off their journey each way by using the ferry instead of the more popular bridge crossings.
The original ferry began service in 1655 as a small raft that was poled across the river. The ferry service was operated by local families for much of its existence and only during the most horrible weather conditions would it temporarily shut down.
Today, the unique open flat boat, "Hollister III" can carry up to three vehicles across the river. It is pulled by the diesel powered towboat, "Cumberland", back and forth across the water.
In the early days, at one point, a watercraft with a horse on a treadmill in the center would power the ferry across the river. The boat was upgraded to a steam-powered ferry in 1876.

Not only does the oldest ferry in America transport vehicles, it carries bicyclists and pedestrians too.
Since riding a bicycle across the Route 2 Bridge is strictly prohibited, the ferry is the only crossing point for cyclists between Hartford and Middletown. Without this little boat, those who choose to pedal their way from here to there face a 13-mile hurdle with no way to traverse the Connecticut River.
Kids and adults alike get a thrill out of this short and sweet ferry ride. The views are phenomenal and there is something quite charming about this old-fashioned river crossing.
Commuters who use the ferry regularly can cross their vehicle for $3 per trip when purchasing a book of 20 commuter coupons in advance for $60.
Are you ready to jump aboard and take a historic trip? The ferry operates seasonally from April 1 - November 30. Enjoy a distinctive view of the fall foliage along the banks of the Connecticut River this autumn aboard the ferry.
Access the ferry at the junction of Route 160 and the Connecticut River in either Rocky Hill and Glastonbury. For more information on this historic ferry visit the Connecticut Department of Transportation website.
