What was once the site of a valuable iron processing furnace is now one of the most beautiful parks in Connecticut. When you visit Old Furnace State Park, you’re not only immersing yourself in spectacular scenery – you’re experiencing a bit of New England history. Take a day trip to Killingly and soak up the beauty of this 367-acre natural area. There is so much to discover!
Old Furnace State Park's history dates all the way back to the American Civil War.
In the 18th century, this area was home to a powerful iron furnace. Here, workers built a variety of necessities - including horseshoes for the Continental Army. As time went on, however, the iron supply dried up. In the 1830s, the furnace was replaced by a grist mill.
The state of Connecticut purchased the land in 1918 and turned it into the spectacular park you see today.
Along your journey, you'll gain a total elevation of 285 feet. Though you may work up a sweat, we think the panoramic views are worth it.
