The small village of Niantic occupies 3.5 square miles on the coast of Connecticut. The population is just over 3,000 people. But there is one thing this shoreline community has that far outnumbers the people — books. With a quirky used bookstore boasting multiple buildings spread across three locations and more than 500,000 books, the village of Niantic is a reader’s paradise.
While many visit the tiny coastal village of Niantic to go to the beautiful beach, others find their way to this part of Connecticut for the books.
The village is home to The Book Barn. The name of the shop already sounds like pure paradise to book lovers but this place is much more than just a barn full of books.
In addition to a three-story barn brimming with titles, the main location has five additional buildings overloaded with volumes. And it has two other locations within less than a mile !
This amounts to more than 500,000 used titles just begging to be read! Bring your own bags and plan to spend a few hours combing the shelves.
The Main Barn originally opened in 1988 with just three bookcases. Over the decades it has exploded into a wonderland of used books.
From paperbacks to hardcovers in every genre you can imagine, you'll want to leave no nook or cranny unexplored.
Expect to have a few shopping companions as you browse. The Book Barn is home to quite a few friendly literature-loving cats.
The next time you're itching for a new read, head to the village of Niantic where there are more books than people!
