Spring in Connecticut is one of the most refreshing and joyous times of the year. There is something so magical about seeing the beauty of nature as it renews itself with beautiful and fragrant new plants. For over four decades, the town of Meriden has been celebrating the joy of this resplendent season with the traditional Meriden Daffodil Festival.
One of Connecticut's most beloved traditions, the Meriden Daffodil Festival has been celebrated every spring since 1978. The festival's origins trace as far back as 1953, when it was announced that April 19 would be known as "Daffodil Day" in the state.
By 1970, Daffodil Day became known as a two-day Daffodil Weekend event. In 1978, the Daffodil Festival officially became a town event and has been celebrated in one aspect or another for 43 years.
The festival has drawn thousands of visitors from all over New England throughout the years, who flock to see its 600,000 blooms and 60 varieties of daffodils. This winsome display is the first blanket of color to burst forth in Connecticut each spring.
Past celebrations have included live music, arts and crafts, a parade, food vendors, and fun carnival rides. Even before the festival gets started, this event has featured fun, charitable activities such a Connecticut's largest yard sale and a Fun Run.
Sadly, because of COVID-19, the city of Meriden and the festival organizers had to make some tough decisions over the last two years. Due to state regulations and for the safety of all visitors, the festival was canceled in 2020, and will again be canceled in 2021.
Although the full festival won't be held this year, it doesn't mean there isn't a reason to celebrate and enjoy the gorgeous daffodils in bloom. Visitors are highly encouraged to take some time to drive through Hubbard Park and enjoy the sights and fragrance of the daffodils.
We look forward to the Meriden Daffodil Festival being back in full swing in April 2022! What are your favorite memories of the past festivals? Share them with us in the comments below!
