Connecticut has some restaurants that are local institutions. Louis Lunch is the birthplace of the hamburger while Pepe’s and Sally’s are tried-and-true pizzerias that have stood the test of time. When it comes to hot dogs, there is one place that stands out. Blackie’s Hot Dog Stand is a legendary spot that’s been serving memorable hot dogs since 1928 in Connecticut.
Blackie's Hot Dog Stand remains frozen in time on Waterbury Road in Cheshire. Nothing much has changed since it first opened in 1928 and generations of locals love it that way. Two octagonal towers, the red and white color scheme, and glowing neon sign make this roadside dive stand out from the rest.
From old-fashioned countertop seating to a limited menu, this place has held onto its old-fashioned charm. The restaurant remains run by the original family and is still always closed on Fridays. Traditions run deep at this iconic spot.
The hot dogs are the heroes at the roadside stand. Every dog served is Blackie’s own recipe made by Martin Rosol’s Meats in New Britain. A little snap to the casings and long enough to extend past the end of the bun are a few of the reasons people relish these dogs.
The only question that remains is how many you order... one, two, or three. You can also choose a burger but no fries are on the menu. There never have been and never will be. The Blackie's philosophy is another tradition: why fill up on fries when you can just order another hot dog! They do offer plain UTZ potato chips in a personal size bag if you're in desperate need of a potato on the side.
One almost necessary component of the Blackie's dog is the crave-worthy hot pepper relish topping. It's a family recipe that dates back to the restaurant's beginning. The mouthwatering relish has a little kick and absolutely no pickles. They even sell it by the jar so you can take some home with you. It's that good.
Wash it all down with a carton of chocolate milk or a birch beer. Enjoy all of the old school nuances at this flavorful joint. Hot dogs, burgers, potato chips, ice cream, and drinks. That's all you'll find at Blackie's and that's all you need.
