There’s a mansion in Connecticut that doubles as a museum, and it’s an incredible sight to see. But it doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. Once you see this amazing piece of history for yourself, you’ll definitely want to pay a visit to this place in person! So get ready for a beautiful adventure.
Lockwood-Matthews Mansion is a museum in Norwalk that represents the growth and rebirth of community and business in Connecticut.
Named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, this 62-room 44,000-square-foot country house is incredible to behold. As America's first true mansion, the story behind this place is equally as alluring.
Now the host to a number of events throughout the year, including a flea market, rotating historical exhibits, art shows, and English tea time, this place began as the home of LeGrand Lockwood.
You can thank him for the intricate details. He built this place from the ground up, a reflection of his personal vision. But he lost everything in Black Friday and the property was foreclosed on.
It was the residents of Norwalk that rallied to save this place from repeating history and being destroyed.
After a series of hand swapping, it was ultimately decided that the place would be torn in the mid 1950s. But the residents disagreed. Their continual efforts to restore the mansion are reflected in their volunteer staff and extensive event hosting. But it also means you get the opportunity to tour a 150-year-old mansion!
The inside is home to incredible collections and original architectural designs.
Kids love hanging out in the billiards room while the adults peruse the space. Families enjoy pitching a blanket for a picnic outside, the perfect place for chasing butterflies, blowing bubbles, and running with no shoes on. Forget about Martha's Vineyard and cabins in Vermont. This is the only summer house I'd want to hang out at!
Featured in The Stepford Wives and House of Dark Shadows movies, it's the stuff on the inside that's really worth a look.
If you thought the outside blew you away, wait until you see the art pieces! Filled with antiques, some of which belonged to the original owner, this house is a blast from the past that's been given new life. So prepare to be wowed!
This mansion belongs to the citizens of Connecticut.
So get out and visit! Attend every event they host and enjoy wandering the acres, exploring the history, and attending the concerts. This place could easily be your new summer home.
This isn’t the only summer destination you need to check out. Pay a visit to this slice of paradise for an in state vacation you’ll never forget!
