Sometimes, when you’re going out to eat, it can feel like there is practically nothing but chain restaurants to choose from. There are plenty of great chains to choose from that offer stupendous food, but in today’s tough financial times, we like to support family-owned restaurants in Connecticut whenever possible. Supporting local businesses ensures that your money stays in the community where you live. One of our favorite family-owned restaurants is Jimmies of Savin Rock. This place has been serving up hot dog and seafood for decades, and has been locally-owned and operated the entire time. Check it out:

Jimmies opened up way back in 1925 as a little hot dog stand that was then called Moxies. The restaurant later moved into a building with a takeout window, and expanded with a dining room as business increased.

The restaurant was opened by Jimmie Gagliardi, whose descendants still own the place today. Jimmies was originally meant to draw in visitors to Savin Rock, an amusement park located nearby, but the little hot dog joint outlasted the amusement park.
Jimmies now features a lovely indoor dining room, a far cry from its roots as a simple hot dog stand!

The dish that is most famous at Jimmies is undoubtedly the split hot dog. These famous franks were cut in half to make them cook quicker for trolley line employees that were always in a hurry.
