As one of the original 13 colonies, it’s a given that we have quite a bit of history in Connecticut. The fact that we’ve been relatively spared from natural disasters and war over the years means that quite a few of our historic buildings have been preserved for the enjoyment of future generations. We have plenty of great historic towns in Connecticut that are perfect getaways for those who love learning about the past while traveling. One of our favorites is Fairfield. It was one of the earliest settlements in southwestern Connecticut, and it was first settled by Europeans back in 1639. There are a surprising number of historic buildings in Fairfield, CT that you can visit today. This is a great historical day trip in Connecticut!
Fairfield is an absolutely beautiful town along the coast, and you'll find plenty to enjoy here, whether you love museums, restaurants, or shopping.
It's actually pretty surprising that there are so many historic buildings here, as the town was burned by British forces in 1779. You'll still find a few surviving buildings from before that time period, and plenty from the 19th century.
The beautiful First Congregational Church was built in 1892 and still holds services today.

Many of the historic buildings in Fairfield, CT are not open to the public, but just strolling through the town's most historic streets will show off some great old architecture.
It's not just historic homes you'll find here. The town is also home to the Bronson Windmill, the last surviving windmill in Fairfield. It was constructed in 1894.
