You don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy visiting a historic military fort. With waterfront views, a fishing pier, and sweeping grounds, Fort Trumbull State Park is more than just an important piece of history. This Connecticut park has something that everyone in the family will enjoy.
Fort Trumbull sits on the banks of the Thames River in New London. The fort and its beautiful 16-acre grounds were opened as a state park in 2000.
The Fort was constructed between 1839 - 1852, this location is one of 42 built to defend the U.S. coast and its harbors. Fort Trumbull is unique in its Egyptian Revival style of architecture. The masonry and stonework are themselves noteworthy for the gorgeous facade they create.
Climb to the top of the ramparts to take in the exquisite views of the Thames River. Take a step back in time and imagine yourself as a guard on duty watching for signs of danger in the harbor.
A guided tour will take you into the depths of the fort where you can view a mock laboratory, restored office and living quarters, and more. Interpretive signs and displays give visitors a unique history lesson of the fort.
Stroll the scenic waterfront walking paths throughout the grounds. Don't pass up a chance to visit the fishing pier that extends 500 feet over the water.
The fishing pier is open 24 hours a day year-round. Bright lighting, running water, rod holders, and restrooms make this a comfortable fishing spot on the Sound. Cast a line and get a chance to reel in striped bass, bluefish, weakfish, and tautog.
Visit Fort Trumbull State Park Visitors Center, Wednesday through Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm from May 21 through Labor Day. The visitors center is closed between Labor Day and Memorial Day weekend. Access to the grounds is free but there is an admission charge for tours and to visit the exhibits. The price for adults is $6, children ages 6-12 cost just $2, and children 5 and under are free.
