Lots of things have gone by the wayside with the advent of modern technology. Landline phones aren’t nearly as common as they once were, phone booths are practically non-existent, and VHS tapes are about as pervasive as the dodo bird. One form of entertainment you may think has gone extinct is the drive-in theater. You might be surprised to learn we still have a few drive-in theaters in Connecticut! You can find one in Southington: the Southington Drive-In in Connecticut. This bit of nostalgia is an amazing attraction that the whole family can enjoy (even if it might have the little ones asking questions about what it even is!).
The Southington Drive-In opened in 1955, when drive-ins were all the rage. It played new movies for almost half a century before closing in the early 2000s, a victim of high-definition home screens and IMAX theaters.
The residents of Southington banded together to save this iconic joint where so many memories had been made. Town citizens voted to expand a nearby park to include the theater, which began showing movies again in 2010.
The non-profit theater puts all proceeds back into the community. The snacks are sold by a local high school club, so you don't have to miss out on the joy of popcorn and candy.
Note that the Southington Drive-In is a cash-only facility, so make sure to stop by an ATM.
