The Colebrook Store has been around since 1803 and has served the town well for over 200 years. It is the state record holder for the longest continuous running general store in Connecticut. That title did not necessarily come easy to the store; there have been ups and downs in its interesting history.
The Colebrook Store is located at 559 Colebrook Rd., Colebrook
The town of Colebrook is located in the northern part of the Nutmeg state. It sits on the Massachusets border in Litchfield County. The general store with its distinctive four column front has been a long-time fixture within the community. The store you see here was actually built in 1812 to replace the smaller store that is located right behind it.
The outer appearance of the store has not changed much over the years.
Even though the store changed hands more than 16 times throughout its existence, the outside still looks pretty much the same. The first time the store was sold in 1825, the sale price was $775. It was sold two more times for a sum of under $1000. The apartment above the general store was usually occupied by the owners.
Today, the inside of The Colebrook Store will transport you to the past with it's old-timey feel.
There is candy in bins at the counter and vintage items on the shelves, the store is welcoming and a bit homey. You can stop by and grab some groceries if you need to, but this country store has so much more to offer.

In 2014, after a seven year closure of the store, it reopened with a new restaurant inside. The atmosphere is still country general store and the food is wonderful.
