Have you ever heard of Charles Island? Or maybe you’ve heard it referred to by its nickname, the Thrice Cursed Island? Well, it’s a beautiful hidden treasure off the coast of Connecticut that you absolutely have to explore. The stories might give you the creeps, but it’s one adventure you just can’t miss!
Charles Island is located off the coast of Milford.
This aerial image shows you exactly how to access the island. The beach pictured is Silver Sands State Park, which connects to Charles Island via the sand bar. It's a pretty easy walk from shore to shore, but the bar only appears at low tide.
Most of the time the island looks like a floating forest off in the distance. Be careful when visiting, because the sandbar is only present for about two hours. Otherwise, you're stuck spending the night on a haunted island!
So what's the story behind Thrice Cursed Island, anyway?
Legend has it that Captain Kidd buried some of his treasure here in 1699. But with 14 acres of possible hiding spots, who knows if it will ever be found. Especially since anyone who goes looking for it will be cursed. The Paugussett Indians also cursed the island after losing it to the Europeans, damning anyone who dared to settle it.
The third curse? A group of 18th century pirates used the island as a meeting place, and cursed anyone who came looking for them there. But the curses can't keep locals away from this gorgeous spot! According to some, you may sight a ghost, or even hear whispering spirits while on the island. But as long as you're there to enjoy the view and not to treasure hunt, they should leave you alone!
You'll never forget a trip to Charles Island! Walking the sandbar will make you feel like you're walking on water as you find yourself standing in the middle of the ocean. Talk about an unforgettable experience! Now a nature preserve, take a walk around the island and enjoy the lush wildlife. Or bring your fishing pole for a chance to snag a nice bluefish. You will love this place!
