With summertime in full swing here in Connecticut, it’s tempting to spend your days at one of our wonderful shoreline beaches or at the nearest waterpark . But don’t discount some of the Nutmeg State’s amazing indoor attractions when you’re planning your next outing. Surround yourself with some of the most entrancing creatures on Earth with a visit to the Butterfly Encounter at the Connecticut Science Center.
If you grew up in Connecticut, you've probably taken at least one pilgrimage to the magnificent Connecticut Science Center in Hartford. Whether you visited on a field trip, with a summer camp, or just wandered in on your own, likely at least one or two exhibits kept you engaged with wonder.
The interactive museum has more than 165 interactive exhibits. Space, energy, and inventions are just a few of the areas to explore.
But many people don't realize that a few years ago, the Butterfly Encounter was added to the array of permanent exhibits. The completely immersive tropical experience is like nothing else at the Science Center.
The Butterfly Encounter is a living exhibit housing 40-50 free-flying species. That's right, enter the greenhouse and the butterflies are fluttering through the air right next to you.
You'll see unique plants and colorful butterflies as they live and grow. Observe as butterflies come out from their chrysalis and then be released.
The butterfly habitat is a warm and balmy 80 degrees with a high humidity creating a tropical paradise for these beautiful creatures.
The Butterfly Encounter is open Tuesday - Friday from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. and weekends and holidays from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. The last entry to this tropical oasis is at 3:30 p.m.
Of course, you'll also want to spend some time checking out the rest of the multi-level science center. There are exhibits to engage all ages.
The Connecticut Science Center is open most days from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. but check their calendar before planning your visit.
