Connecticut is well-known as a state filled with some of the most beautiful natural views and plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities. From hiking and camping to fishing and kayaking, Nutmeggers love adventure. When you’re ready to get out on the lake to commune with nature and kayak, Lake Zoar is the best lake to start your kayaking adventure.
Lake Zoar borders the towns of Oxford, Monroe, Newtown, and Southbury. It is also part of Kettletown State Park. The lake was named after a corner of Monroe and Newtown, which was once named after the biblical town of Zoara.
The lake is a reservoir that was made in 1919 by Connecticut Light and Power after the Stevenson dam was built to hold back the Housatonic River. Today, the lake is the fifth largest fresh body of water in Connecticut.
Lake Zoar is a calm lake and perfect for a beginning kayaker. On a clear day, you can see 7-8 feet below the surface of the blue-green lake. This makes it easy to see rocks, branches, fish, and any other obstacles that may be underneath your kayak.
Get out this summer to explore some of the most gorgeous lakeside views in Connecticut. Take a few hours to enjoy the tranquility of Lake Zoar. Don’t own your own kayak? You can rent one from Lake Zoar Family Marina & Kayak Rentals. Find out more and plan your adventure by visiting the Kettletown State Park website.
