Sometimes you’re looking for a getaway without going far away. At this bed and breakfast in Old Saybrook, you can enjoy a relaxing retreat without ever leaving Connecticut. James Pharmacy Bed and Breakfast has roots deep into the late 1700s but now is a modern inn where spending the night is a welcome escape.
The James Pharmacy was built in 1790 and originally served as the general store for the Humphrey Pratt Tavern on Main Street. In 1887, the building was moved to its current location on Pennywise Lane by a team of oxen. Peter Lane, one of the first African American pharmacists in Connecticut, rented the property with his wife in 1895 and established Old Saybrook's first pharmacy, adding a soda fountain the following year.
Anna James, Peter's sister-in-law came to live with him in 1902 and was the first African American woman to graduate from the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy in 1908. When Peter left to serve in the military in 1917, the pharmacy was turned over to Anna. She made many improvements, including a two-story wing addition, over the years and continued to dispense medicines and ice cream to the local community.
The bed and breakfast has been lovingly restored to reflect current times. Three beautiful guest rooms are decorated with a modern flair. Sink into beautiful four poster beds with luxurious linens for a heavenly place to spend the night.
Private bathrooms accompany each room at the inn. Enjoy a hot shower and then don the luxurious robes and slippers provided by the inn. Next, snuggle up in front of the gas fireplace and enjoy the ambiance of this historic spot.
Start your morning off with a scrumptious breakfast. As you open the door of your room to head downstairs, you'll smell the tempting aroma of freshly baked croissants. This will get you fueled up for touring the town, shopping, hitting the beach, or another local adventure.
