If you are an animal lover, Colorado is truly the best place to be! In addition to the native wildlife found throughout the eastern and western parts of the state, Colorado is also home to a number of different zoos, parks, and sanctuaries, housing different types of animals from all over the world. While you have your pick of places to check out, we personally recommend this little-known animal sanctuary:
Located in Keenesburg, The Wild Animal Sanctuary is a massive 720-acre facility that houses more than 450 different lions, tigers, and bears (oh my!).
Billed as being the largest carnivore sanctuary in the world, The Wild Animal Sanctuary was opened in 1980 and has made it their mission "to rescue captive large carnivores who have been abused, abandoned, illegally kept or exploited; to create for them a wonderful life for as long as they live; and to educate about the causes and solutions to the Captive Wildlife Crisis."
Aside from the fact that they are the world's oldest and largest nonprofit Sanctuary, The Wild Animal Sanctuary is unique in that -- unlike most zoos or exhibits -- the animals are able to roam free in their own species-specific habitats.
Tasha and Tiny seem pretty content to me!
When you visit the Sanctuary, you can expect to see hundreds of animals interacting with one another...
...a large centralized compound (which is where animals go when they are first admitted to the Sanctuary and are being treated, cared for, and accustomed to their new surroundings)...
...and the guest favorite: the large "Mile Into The Wild Walkway," which allows visitors the opportunity to see the animals overhead via an expansive 1 1/2 mile walkway.
In addition to all of this, the Sanctuary grounds are also home to a climate-controlled welcome center, which offers a place to rest, eat, and shop!
The Wild Animal Sanctuary is located at 2999 Co Rd 53 in Keenesburg and is open daily (weather and holiday pending) from 9 am to sunset. More information on admission costs, ways to help, and the animals can be found on their website .
