One Of The Oddest Geological Wonders Is Located Right Here In Colorado
Colorado rocks! No, I’m not just talking about all of the awesome people, attractions, and special events; I am talking about the Rocky Mountains, Garden of the Gods, Red Rocks, and this geological wonder that has to be seen to be believed:
Located just northeast of Creede, the Wheeler Geologic Area is a series of highly eroded volcanic ash from an explosion nearly 25 millions years ago. Spanning an impressive 640 acres, Wheeler is Colorado’s first National Monument and is comprised of volcanic tuff and debris blown into the air post-eruption, making it one of the most unique geological sites in the state. Seeing as though these formations are merely volcanic ash, one would think that they would quickly deteriorate, right? Wrong, as they are merely specs of dust that are constantly eroding and changing! All of this being said, this strange and fascinating wonder is truly something that needs to be seen to be believed.
As per AllTrails, “To reach the trailhead, drive about 7 miles southeast of Creede on Colorado 149, then turn left on Pool Table Road, #600 and proceed about 10 miles to Hanson’s Mill. The two-wheel drive road ends here.”
