A gas station is a gas station is a gas station… or is it? Even if you don’t own a car, you have probably been to a gas station or two in your life. It was likely a big-name fuel company and had a travel mart packed with chips, candy, energy drinks, and microwavable burritos. However, not all gas stations are created equal, and some of them are downright fascinating. One such spot can be found right here in Colorado, and it’s unlike any other in the world.
Located in the southeast corner of Colorado is the small town of Lamar, which is home to 7,500 residents, a rich railroad history, and...
...one of the most unique gas stations in America.
Welcome to the Petrified Wood Gas Station; an aptly named 1932 building that was built by hand with 175 million-year-old pieces of petrified wood.
Due to its unique structural elements, it is often referred to as the "Oldest Building in the World." Though no longer an actual filling station, the name comes from the former Philips gas station that originally occupied the space. Following the closure of the station, the building also housed the Lamar Tire Service, but is now used for private offices.
Though fascinating, there is some controversy surrounding this unique structure, as the original owner/builder is said to have taken the petrified wood used in its construction from private land, which now has little to none left in the area.
Mining for petrified wood has been done by countless others throughout the decades, so the founder was not alone in his actions; however, it is unfortunate that such ancient wonders have been depleted or destroyed over the years.
While you can no longer pump gas at the Petrified Wood Gas Station, we still recommend driving by, as the building's architecture is truly a sight to see.
The Petrified Wood Gas Station is located at 501 N Main St., Lamar, CO 81052.
