In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, mining played a HUGE role in Colorado’s economy, with a good percentage of new residents moving here to quarry. While most Coloradans know this already, few have ever experienced what this line of work was really like for early residents, which is why we love and recommend visiting this underground Colorado mining museum.
Located in southwest Colorado is the small town of Creede, which was incorporated in 1892 as a mining community.
Now home to an estimated 300 residents, Creede once housed more than 10,000, who kept busy thanks to a silver boom in the area's surrounding mines.
While these Mineral County mines have since run dry, the town has managed to keep its roots alive, thanks to such attractions as the must-see Creede Underground Mining Museum and Community Center.
The Creede Underground Mining Museum, which was opened in 1992, isn't housed in building like you might expect; it sits inside a cave in a rock cliff that was blasted out by miners in Creede.
Since opening, the museum has hosted more than 25,000 visitors, who have come to see such amazing displays as authentic mining tools...
...a number of mannequins demonstrating the work of a miner...
...and a glimpse at some of the old equipment used by these hardworking men.
When visiting the museum, guests have the option to take either a guided or audio tour, both of which can be scheduled by calling 719-658-0811.
The Creede Underground Mining Museum is located at 503 Forest Service Rd. #9 in Creede and is open seven days a week.
